Transparent Living
On a fundamental level, transparency builds trust and trust is the foundation of any successful relationship, whether it’s personal or business. That is because people are naturally drawn to openness and honesty.
If we take a step back and start looking where it all begins, in our childhood, where all of us have our roots embedded, we may realize that is the place to start the change for the better and for the long run. We need to teach our children the true values that matter in life, and transparency has an important role among. It’s no surprise that friendships tied in the early years last for a lifetime in some cases, because in our childhood we are true to ourselves and those friendships are based on common interests and morals. And once tied, those connections are solid because they are built on the right set of reasons, opposed to adulthood friendships, which are many times built on social or financial benefits, or other types of similar artificial constructions.
In our relationships, transparency takes many forms, like openness, honesty, clarity, etc. In such relationships, there is a strong emphasis on sharing thoughts, feelings and information with sincerity and without deceit. Honesty is the cornerstone of transparent relationships. We are forthright and truthful with each other, even when it’s difficult. We don’t hide important information, lie, or engage in deceitful behavior. Transparent relationships encourage open and frequent communication, discussing thoughts, concerns, fears, insecurities, as well as joys and successes. Therefore, trust is a natural outcome. When we are consistently open and honest with each other, trust builds over time. On the other hand, dissent is addressed constructively. Disagreements become opportunities for growth and understanding, while we work together to find solutions.
If I can choose, I go for the open and honest approach all the time. I can’t imagine myself being in a relationship where I have to second guess the other’s intentions. Personally, I would find that to be so exhausting, constantly trying to figure out the reality of what is true and what isn’t.
In our professional life, transparency has also a significant role. It involves sharing information, decisions and processes with employees or clients, fostering an environment of trust, accountability and fairness. When employees perceive transparency in the workplace, they are more likely to trust their leaders and feel engaged with their work. They are confident that decisions are made with their best interests in mind and when the time comes, they will be considered for opportunities based on merit. Transparent workplaces encourage open dialog, which helps to prevent misunderstandings, conflicts and rumors. Leaders take responsibility for their decisions and actions. If mistakes are made, those are acknowledged and addressed openly. This accountability fosters a sense of fairness. Feedback is given more naturally, which leads to innovative ideas and improvements. And not least, the leaders align their actions with their stated values and mission. This consistency shapes the organization’s identity.
In customer relations, transparency involves providing customers with accurate and complete information about products, services, pricing, policies, and any other relevant details. That is essential for ensuring customer satisfaction, building a positive reputation, fostering customer loyalty, which ultimately is driving long-term success.
Transparent relationships, whether in personal or professional settings, involve a foundation built on open communication and trust, which requires commitment and effort from all parties involved. We need to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment, to encourage different viewpoints and to demonstrate that all opinions are considered. This creates a reciprocal environment where others feel comfortable doing the same.
In professional settings, sharing relevant information about the organization’s goals, challenges and decisions builds trust among team members. Clear expectations help prevent misunderstandings and promote clarity. When mistakes happen, everyone takes responsibility. Acknowledging errors, learning from them and communicating the steps being taken to avoid similar issues in the future, creates a forum for open communication and feedback, and helps building the framework for future learning. Because focus should be on improvement, rather than blame.
Consistency is the next important element. We need to be consistent in our actions and communication because that’s how trust is built over time. If we make promises or commitments, we must ensure that we follow through.
Questions and discussions need to be encouraged by embracing diversity of thought and respect for different perspectives. We need to create an environment where everyone feels they have a voice. And at times, when conflicts arise, address them promptly and directly. We must encourage open dialogue to find root cause and then the appropriate resolutions that work for the ones involved. On the other hand, when achievements happen, we must acknowledge and celebrate them openly and genuinely.
It doesn’t matter if we’re in an executive role of an organization or just a simple member of the parents committee at our kid’s school, by demonstrating transparent behavior, others will follow the example.
Transparency is a powerful trait that leads to stronger relationships, better communication and greater success in both personal and professional aspects of life. It requires courage, but ultimately leads to a more authentic and fulfilling way of living.
